Radical Systems has pledged a $4,000 donation to help give the Indigemoji mobile app a new lease on life.
Indigemoji is a mobile app that provides a set of 90 emojis representing the life, culture and language of Arrernte Country in Central Australia. The design and development of the app started in the 2018-19 summer school holidays, with the participation of 960 young people. The scale of participation of various designers, artists, technologists and youth in Central Australia is an incredible feat.
Radical Systems first heard of the Indigemoji project from an article in the Northern Territory News. We were pleased to contribute the remaining funding to allow it to reach a $10,000 funding goal, to be used to refresh the app and keep it functioning on modern versions of mobile operating systems.
The more we learn about Indigemoji, the more we think it is a trailblazing project, with the involvement of numerous Indigenous technologists and artists, young and old. Preserving some of the world's oldest Indigenous languages is an inspirational mission. A goal of the project is to have the Arrernte emojis added to the official Unicode emoji set. Unicode is addressing issues concerning representation and diversity but an application for a new emoji must demonstrate widespread usage and can take years to approve.
We're looking forward to seeing more from Indigemoji and its creators and contributors.
You can download the Indigemoji app on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
